Marilyn Monroe & José Bolaños at the Golden Globe Awards, 1962
in the early 1960s Marilyn was on the brink of reconciliation with her ex-husband Joe DiMaggio, their marriage in 1954 had only lasted 9 months but DiMaggio stayed a constant presence in Marilyn’s life and it was widely rumored that they planned to remarry. After escorting her to the airport for a highly publicized “furniture buying” trip to Mexico DiMaggio was shocked when she returned with no furniture but instead a handsome young Mexican Screenwriter named José Bolaños. Marilyn took Bolaños as her date to the Golden Globes and the two were inseparable throughout the evening.
Exactly 5 months later Marilyn was found dead in her Brentwood, California home, she was 36. One of the last people she spoke to the night of her death was Bolaños over the phone and he has reported she told him something “that will one day shock the whole world” but refused to elaborate.
It’s been said that DiMaggio never fully recovered from Marilyn’s death and refused to ever speak of her, although he lived for another 37 years he never remarried.
