It has often been said that Cass Elliott fell in love with Denny Doherty the moment she laid eyes on him. Doherty stated that Elliot once proposed to him, but that he was so stoned at the time, he couldn’t respond. When he confided in her that he was having an affair with their married bandmate Michelle Phillips she was reportedly heart broken.
