A few weeks after giving birth to her daughter in 1965, Joni Mitchell met an American folk singer named Chuck Mitchell at the Penny Farthing folk club in Toronto. Not long after their first meeting Joni left Canada for the first time in her life to return to America with Chuck where they were married in his home town, she was 21. Joni said of the wedding:”We had no money. I made my wedding dress… I walked down the aisle brandishing my daisies.”
The couple then moved to Detroit where they became regular performers at local coffee houses with the Chuck and Joni Show. They appeared together in a staged photo spread in the Detroit Free Press intended as a send up of traditional stilted bridal poses.
by 1967 the marriage had dissolved and Joni moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of a solo career.
